I walked into the house and immediately felt at home. The walls had long cracks from the ceiling to the floor, the wallpaper was awful, and the stairs were rotten, but I could see what it could be. Besides that, it really was my home. I was born and raised there, and I immediately felt a lightness ripple through my body. Why had I stayed away for so long? Stupid pride, that was why. Like many kids who grow up in Anywhere Podunk, USA, I couldn’t wait to see this ramshackle house and town shrink into oblivion in my rear view mirror and join the real world in a big, bustling city. I clawed my way through law school, graduated with honors, passed the bar exam on my first try, and was hired at the prestigious Pritchard, Pritchard & Weiss LTD.
